SUP Kids

supkidsThe SUPKids program is designed to teach kids SUP, water safety and environmental education.

From their beautifully designed website: “We know what it’s like to fall in love with being in the ocean. And we know that, with a passion for SUP comes a responsibility to take care of our environment. Our vision is to create experiences for our SUPKids that will enhance their appreciation, respect and understanding for sustainable living.

lessons-new-1Our program is run in an inclusive, non-competitive environment with a real focus on building self-esteem. We use games, drills and SUP activities to ensure that our SUPKids walk away with vital water safety skills that will stay with them for life. We’ve taken environmental education out of the classroom, to the great outdoors, where we think it belongs.”

In 2015 the SUP Kids team traveled to Thailand to hang out with the Starboard team and give them an opportunity to experience SUPKids for themselves. SUPKids vision aligned with Starboard and their Starboard Blue commitment.

The SUP Kids program

Summer camp for five full days

SUP Kids follows a standardized curriculum which may be delivered in one of three formats:

  1. Once a week for five weeks
  2. Condensed one day version

Regardless of the format, the program covers five lessons:

  1. Safe SUP
  2. SUP adventures – getting kids outdoors
  3. Ocean plastics
  4. Healthy SUP Kid – yoga, nutrition, fitness
  5. Ambassador for the planet – Any kid that takes the program will leave with a goal of something they want to work towards in terms of a cause they care about.

In addition to their partnership with Starboard, SUP Kids has business relationships with Parley for the Oceans, Sustainable Surf, and Mafia Bags. The latter manufactures each SUP Kid’s backpack from recycled sails. SUP Kids is also partnered with the Thor Heyerdahl Climate Park in Myanmar where a mangrove tree is planted for each child that participates in SUP Kids.
